Trailer text & visual notes
What would you risk to get a life back? In a small Australian town, a young theatre producer's first tour is finally paying off. Then the telephone rings. His leading man is behind bars. In Tuscany, a painting forgotten on a wardrobe draws a family back, twenty-five years later. And in El Paso, a boxer who has lost almost everything finds a woman, a child, and a reason to begin again. Until a border threatens to take them away. Different lives. Different choices. Fourteen stories about the past we carry, the chances we miss, and the people who change what comes next. Winding Back, by Wilton Morley. Funny, unsettling, and deeply human. How well do you really know the story you remember? Turn the page.
Three distinct lives ask what people will risk to retrieve a future or a past.

About the book
Fourteen short stories move between past and present in Winding Back, drawing their starting points from theatre, travel, family memories and newspaper reports. Wilton Morley’s author’s notes distinguish remembered events from fictional inventions and explain the dual-time theme behind the collection’s title.
The opening story, “Larry’s Last Act,” follows a young producer taking an American comedy around Australia with an actor whose aspirations are larger than his recent success. Elsewhere, the contents lead readers towards Havana, a painting, an Irish girl and the circumstances behind the title story. These are stories shaped by encounters and recollections, but they are not simply a record of events: Morley uses the remembered detail as a way into imagined lives, altered circumstances and the distance between then and now.
