About the book

A family caravan, a note discovered among old papers and a rumour about a search for missing Nazis provide the starting points for The Last Gypsy. In his author’s note, Wilton Morley describes a novel built from fact, fiction and rumour, following the aftermath of the Holocaust and the desire for revenge.

The story opens at an encampment north of Paris in 1943. A policeman arrives at night to warn its leader of a raid planned for the following morning, offering reassurances that make obedience sound like safety. From that uneasy encounter, the novel enters a world of persecution, survival and unsettled accounts. Its historical setting frames a fictional story about people living with the consequences of what has been done to them.

An excerpt from The Last Gypsy

The Gypsies — Encampment. North of Paris. 1943.

The old man trusted Montclaire. As policemen went, he was one of the better ones. In his late fifties, Montclaire had never moved up through the ranks as his wife had hoped he would do. He had a reputation for bucking the system, going too easy on the criminal classes.
