Summer, nineteen seventy-nine. Theo Rencher can write a song that stops a room. Keeping his own life together is another matter. A failing career. A woman he still cares about. And a drinking habit he cannot shake. Then a tour of New Zealand offers a second chance. And a journalist gives him a reason to imagine a different future. Back in Tennessee, a roadside discovery draws the police toward the farm Theo calls home. Deputy Saffron King is also following a trail into the town's past, searching for justice for a man who was denied it. One man searching for a fresh start. Another searching a buried past. How much can love forgive? And how long can injustice stay hidden? Kerosene. By Wilton Morley. Start reading.

About the book

Two trials, seventy years apart, ignite a small Tennessee town.

Summer, 1979. Theo Rencher is standing in the rain beside Route 40, regretting his decision to hitchhike. A week earlier he watched his father die. Now, with a hangover taking hold and the light fading, he is trying to put distance between himself and the house he has left behind.

Kerosene opens with a man caught between grief, family obligations and the old romance of the open road. The passing trucks offer the possibility of escape, but the weather makes even the next ride uncertain. Against this sharply drawn beginning, Wilton Morley sets a novel whose two trials reach across seventy years of a Tennessee town’s history.

An excerpt from Kerosene

Summer 1979. Somewhere out on Route 40.

He’d left his watch back at the house, but he must have been standing in the rain for at least three hours. The last light was fading slowly, dusk loitering with intent, clinging on for dear life. He wondered if this was how it had felt to his father whom he had watched die a week ago. The old man’s head had bobbled like a dashboard ornament atop the shrunken torso; dull gray morphine eyes staring towards the garden, counting down the hours.
